FRAGMENTS

Anna Loucah

We work in a luxury industry and so much of what we create is coveted and of high value. But the things we use in our day-to-day life and discard easily are often deemed worthless.

The best example of this indifference is single use plastic. Although the time of its usefulness to us is short, the time that it remains intact is not. So, we have a lot of plastic, but we want gold. What if we could turn plastic into gold? Would we be more careful with it then?

My ‘Fragments’ collection was created by collecting beach plastic from the coastline where I live and casting it directly into precious metal. Raw diamonds are also added which themselves were collected from the ocean beds.

By transforming a material that we so readily discarded into materials of great natural beauty I hope we can think about what nature gives to us and what we can offer in return.

That is why Fairmined is so important. Their work ensures that it’s not only the gold that is treated as precious – but that the mining communities and environment are also respected. It shows that working with care and dignity is not only possible but, if done correctly, ensures that all involved can thrive
