Pioneering Amazon Communities obtain Fairmined Certification for Responsible Gold

Four ASGM communities, pioneers in responsible mining in Madre de Dios, Peru, have achieved Fairmined certification, marking a monumental milestone. A collective effort between the Alliance for Responsible Mining, Pure Earth and supported by Brilliant Earth, these mining organizations, including Linda 2, El Príncipe Azul 1, Fatima, and Abel 3, showcase the transformative power of responsible practices in the Amazon.
The dedication of these miners, alongside Pure Earth and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), highlights a commitment to eliminate mercury use, reforest affected lands, and adhere to Fairmined standards. Their journey is a beacon of hope, proving that responsible mining practices are achievable, safeguarding the environment and benefiting local communities.
This achievement establishes the first Fairmined supply chain in the Peruvian Amazon, a testament to the critical role market support plays in promoting responsible mining. As consumer demand for ethically sourced materials grows, organizations like the Alliance for Responsible Mining propel ASGM communities to invest in sustainable practices.

The impact extends beyond certification, addressing environmental concerns and contributing to the well-being of communities in the Amazon. The certified organizations have reforested 8.4 hectares, minimizing their environmental footprint. This achievement sets a precedent for other ASGM communities worldwide, showcasing that with dedication and collaboration, sustainable mining is possible.
The Fairmined certification, a robust standard system adopted since 2014, has empowered over 3,000 miners and sold 1.7 tons of certified gold internationally. Mining organizations have received over $7 million in Fairmined premiums, validating their commitment to responsible practices and incentivizing continued investments in technical enhancements, environmental preservation, and social impact. The transformation in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector is evident, the results of their efforts are bearing fruit.
