“Inclusive miners” is the name of the project that the Alliance for Responsible Mining develops from October 2020 to 2023 in Peru (Puno region), with funding from the Fondation Ensemble and co-funding from the Ford Foundation and Colorado School of Mines.
The general objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the living and working conditions of the mining communities, benefiting approximately 3,300 people, including miners, their families, and the community in general.
The original name of the project is “Upscaling an inclusive, responsible, and gender-sensitive Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) model based on Fairmined certification in the Puno Region of Peru”.
A more inclusive and responsible ASM
The project seeks to contribute to improving the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in the region, through the dissemination and strengthening of the Fairmined model, with a focus on gender equity and environmental protection. Following, some of the accomplishments to be achieved with the project:
- Strengthen an inclusive governance strategy with a gender focus, enabling spaces for dialogue and empowering miners in decision-making.
- Support mining organizations certified with the Fairmined Standard to maintain their certification and implement more environmentally friendly mining practices.
- Accompany new mining organizations in their improvement process to achieve Fairmined certification.
- Provide support to 2 groups of vulnerable women (rock collectors) to strengthen their socio-economic resilience: development of capacities in health, safety and well-being, sexual and reproductive health, gender violence, nutrition, business strengthening, among others.
Towards the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals
“Inclusive Miners” is the second phase of the project. The Ensemble Foundation funded the first phase of the project, developed between 2017 and 2020.
The work of the Alliance for Responsible Mining in this territory seeks to continue contributing to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals proposed by the United Nations, to impact the living conditions of these mining communities positively.
