ASM without Covid-19: campaign to promote self-care of miners in Peru

The Alliance for Responsible Mining is part of the ASM without Covid-19 campaign in Peru to promote self-care practices to prevent contagion by Covid-19 in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector, on which approximately 1 million people depend in that country.

Frequent handwashing with soap and water, a distance of 1 meter from other people, the correct use of the mask, and avoiding agglomerations in open and closed places are the main recommendations for miners to carry out their work in a safer way.

In 2020, different mining organizations and women rock collectors (pallaqueras) were affected by the cessation of operations due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19 in Peru. After several months in quarantine, this sector was able to reactivate its mining activities and the great challenge of adapting to the new normal. In this context, the ASM campaign without Covid-19 was launched for the first time.

This year, given the rise in infections, this campaign was reactivated to help the sector carry out its activities safely and promote biosecurity standards that protect miners’ health.

This initiative is led by the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Ministry of the Environment of Peru. Allies such as Planet Gold, Solidaridad, Pure Earth, Artisanal Gold Council, Red Social, Megam, Center for Amazonian Scientific Innovation, among others, also participate.
