ARM continues bringing support to Fairmined-certified small scale mining organizations and pallaqueras (mining women who handpick gold) in the region of Puno, Peru, with training in accounting practices, asset laundering prevention, and an entrepreneurship workshop, to follow their path towards a progressive improvement.

These activities are part of the ”Charpitas Inclusivas” Project, developed by The Alliance for Responsible Mining in Peru, thanks to the funding from Fundación Ensemble, and aiming to strengthen the good practices in mining organizations certified with the Fairmined Standard, and to improve living conditions of mining women in the area of Puno.

Training to certified mining organizations

The certified mining organizations: Cecomip Mining Organization Oro Puno S.A., and the Cruz Pata Chaquiminas Mining Project, received training in organizational strengthening, aiming to recognize and implement good accounting practices, and the return of the added value tax as a benefit to the exporter in the small scale mining sector. Additionally, they received support to comply with the International Accounting Standards – IAS, and the International Financial Reporting Standards – IFRS, among other requirements demanded by the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration of Peru (Superintendencia Nacional de Aduanas y de Administración Tributaria de Perú – SUNAT). They were also trained in the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing Risk Management System – SARLAFT.

Training for pallaqueras

“Pallaqueras” is the word used for mining women who look for gold among rocks thrown on mine slopes. 75% of them make an income below the minimum legal wage and half are in extreme poverty. This is an activity for the livelihood of households in which pallaqueras are mothers head of household.

As a part of the model to improve living conditions of these women miners, ARM carried out a series of workshops to increase their business and entrepreneurial skills. These spaces seek to provide the pallaqueras with tools for the ideation and formalization of microenterprises and SMEs (MIPYMES) so that they have a livelihood alternative in addition to mining. Get to know more about Charpitas inclusivas Project.
